SPAIN: AUGUST 2006

I arrived in the medieval city of El Escorial Spain on a beautiful day in early August. Josemi Lorenzo, the coordinator of the continuing education course in feminism, met me in the lobby of the residence where the conference was held. From the moment I arrived, I began to meet and talk with fascinating people from many cities, towns and universities in Spain. Feminism is a big topic in this country that is still very much in the ‘recovery’ and ‘discovery’ period after many years under Franco’s regime.

I discussed the EU’s influence on Spanish politics as well as the Catholic Church and its influence on women, feminism and family. I also learned that in much of Europe, even those counties where it is legal, as in Spain, gay marriage is being used as a divisive technique to push the liberal, religious contingency farther to the right. Many issues that we think are ‘American’ problems are stretching across the ocean. They are looking to the US as a model. The global movement must include many women voices. This is only the beginning of a much larger and farther-reaching discussion that is sprouting around the world. – Eva Le Gallienne



SOUTH KOREA: AUGUST 2004

We were one of 91 artists from 38 countries invited to realize the 2nd Busan Biennale exhibition in Seoul, South Korea. One of our pieces in the exhibit was a collaborative work with the South Korean feminist group IPGIM entitled “ISLAND”. Both a performance and visual work, “ISLAND” exposes current stats about sex trafficking in Asia as well as applauds 14 female victims who have recently filed a lawsuit demanding national reparation.

PARIS, FRANCE: MARCH 30-APRIL 3 2003

Invited by the Palais de Tokyo, our posters, actions and photographs were included in their international exhibit “Hardcore, vers un nouvel activisme”. Aphra Behn, Alice Childress, Hallie Flanagan and Diana Sands performed our Guerrilla Girls On Tour Gig to a standing room only crowd on the evening of April 1, 2003 and also appeared on French Channel 3.

WARSAW, POLAND: APRIL 13-14 2003


In collaboration with the National Women’s Information Network of Warsaw, OSKa, and through a grant from ArtsLink in New York, we toured to Eastern Europe for the first time and worked with seven Polish women artist/activists on a site-specific version of The Guerrilla Girls On Tour Show that included the work of Polish playwright Stanislawa Przybyszewska (1901-1935). The world premiere took place on April 11th in Warsaw immediately followed by a performance at a women’s conference in Poznan on April 12th.

Aphra Behn, Alice Childress, Cheryl Crawford, Hallie Flanagan, Helena Modrzejewska, Diana Sands and Sophie Treadwell were the GGOT’s involved in this historic trip. Out of our collaboration came a sister group - Guerrilla Girls On Tour Polska.
